Gangway Collapse During Fourth of July Celebration
FERNANDINA BEACH, FL — During the fireworks show on the evening of July 4, a gangway at the Fernandina Harbor Marina collapsed, prompting initial confusion and concern among attendees. Emergency response units, including the Fernandina Beach Police Department and Fire Department, were on scene and responded immediately. Although early reports mistakenly referenced an active shooter and a missing child, both were quickly determined to be false. No individuals fell into the water.
“Our number one job is keeping residents safe,” said City Manager Sarah Campbell. “We are grateful there were no serious injuries and that our first responders acted swiftly to secure the area.”
Event organizers, Light Up Amelia Inc., have successfully hosted the Fourth of July celebration since 2012 without prior incident. This year’s celebration saw larger-than-expected crowds due to the holiday falling on a long weekend and new traffic patterns along Front Street. Despite the unexpected disruption, the fireworks display continued safely after the scene was secured.
Eleven individuals were evaluated at a triage site established at City Hall, with only one person requiring minor first aid.
Following the incident, the City engaged an engineering firm to assess the gangway structure and plan next steps. Marine contractors are working on a proposal for removing the damaged gangway from the Fernandina Harbor Marina.
A post incident meeting resulted in several actionable items to ensure incidents like this during special events do not happen again.
The City is committed to the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors and will continue to provide updates as the assessment and rebuilding process continues.
