2022 School Board Member Candidate Questionnaire
What is your vision for education in this community?
My vision for education in our community is to provide the students with the greatest need of support what they require to achieve academic prosperity. Aiding the students who need more help get that help will ensure the growth of all students. Education equity will provide each student the same opportunity without the same circumstances. I’d like to allow teachers more creativity within the classroom which will create a more stylized and engaging teaching method to better engage each student.

What do you see as major concerns facing Nassau County School Districts?
My main focuses will be to ensure the safety of all our students and staff, to improve the mental health of the students, teacher retainment and maintain clear and transparent interactions with the community about the district’s budget.

What resources or investments are needed to best support "ALL" students in Nassau County in the future?
Training teachers to better recognize mental health issues and bullying as well as academically struggling students. Ensuring adequate training will result in a better response to intervention. Encourage more awareness of available training to teachers who are unaware of the resources available to them in all aspects of the classroom including their own career development.

What do you have in mind for your term of office and how will you achieve them?
My plan is to have the community more involved in the education of our children. Encouraging everyone to voice their opinions and concerns will give a broader perspective and incorporate more ideas to better the district. There needs to be more follow through to the community’s concerns. Many times, citizens speaking in front of the school board express their thoughts, questions and complaints and it seems to dead end right there at the podium. Reaching out after research and following up with the posed questions will improve the communication greatly. This can be accomplished with an online announcement board on the website.

How do you think Nassau County schools are doing at providing quality science, technology, engineering, math, and art education? What will you recommend improving on these?
Nassau County has great STEAM programs in secondary education, but we need more STEAM incorporated in the curriculum of primary education. Promoting STEAM at an early age ensures that students become more interested in these subjects, which in turn prepares them for their future outside of the classroom. Exposing our young students to more art and science will create a more well-rounded and educated pupil.

Do you believe it is a priority to utilize technology inside and outside the classroom so that students can gain technical skills necessary for the future occupations? How can we better prepare students for the workplace?
Technology is the heart of the future. Laptops and tablet devices encourage independent study and create an additional outlet to communicate with their teachers. Using computer-based games for learning sparks interest in STEAM. This approach encourages students to have a more hands on experience and real-life scenarios.

Offering after school learning help and tutoring are the easiest way to attain this but with the new more frequent standardized tests should identify which students need extra help earlier in the school year so that teachers can focus on the areas that each students need to work on. Grouping children by skill set to get the additional help they need to be on track at their pace of learning, give teachers the opportunity to teach with their certain style and gather support to provide these styles.

Allocating available funds to the areas that need the most funding, petition the state for more funding and having more parent involvement will aid in the support of teachers. Provide a list or create a portal of resources that identifies programs that can provide help to the classrooms. Also, collaborating with teachers and the community to research other types of grants and funds.

How will you address the need for more schools and future growth?
The need for more schools is inevitable. The number of registered students determines the need for schools. Funds are disbursed by that number. Overcrowding was once a big issue and could easily become a big issue again. Nassau County School District already has plans to build additional schools, but we need to be transparent on large purchases and awarding contracts of bids for construction.

It’s just as important for parents to make an effort to be involved in their students’ affairs as it is for the district to make sure information is distributed. Our current programs, like Remind, are terrific resources which I use often as a parent of a student. In your opinion, how best can the Chamber of Commerce and the business community partner with the school district?
The chamber of commerce is an excellent resource. Using their services, we can build better relationships between businesses and the school district. Informing businesses and the community on where to get help from the district as well as how businesses and community members can provide help to the district.
