2022 School Board Member Candidate Questionnaire

What is your vision for education in this community?
Continue to build on the successes of the past to provide every student with a quality education, so they can make an informed choice about their future.
What do you see as major concerns facing Nassau County School Districts?
Retaining quality teachers and staff.  Florida is significantly behind our neighboring states when it comes to teacher salaries and benefits.  As inflation continues to be a major bottleneck to economic growth, the disparity in salaries and benefits is wider than ever.
What resources or investments are needed to best support "ALL" students in Nassau County in the future?
Building relationships between the private sector and the educational system to ensure we are building seamless paths to high-skill, high-wage careers for our students.
What do you have in mind for your term of office and how will you achieve them?
While the power of a school board member is statutorily limited, I see the need for school board members to get politically active to bring educational issues to a state-wide audience to make sweeping reforms in teacher and staff retention and development.
How do you think Nassau County schools are doing at providing quality science, technology, engineering, math, and art education? What will you recommend improving on these?
Nassau County is lagging in STEM programs that transfer into real-world careers that put our students in position to compete with students around the nation in these fields.  It takes time to recruit quality instructors and build programs such as cyber-security, alternative energy, and high-tech logistics.  Building relationships with the private sector is critical to the success of the programs in the future.
Do you believe it is a priority to utilize technology inside and outside the classroom so that students can gain technical skills necessary for the future occupations? How can we better prepare students for the workplace?
The use of technology inside and out of the classroom has been a priority for many years, but with an increase in the use of technology, an increase in unwanted behavior is inevitable.  Strong parental partnerships with the schools to build an atmosphere of support with digital citizenship in and out of the classroom is a critical step success.
What are your areas of concerns regarding student achievement and how will they be addressed?
Math instruction is always the toughest subject to make gains in student achievement.  The achievement gap widens quickly as students get older which makes it difficult to make improvements.  In order to improve mathematical thinking, it has to be taught in-context with real-world projects so students can make connections between the concepts and the mathematical processes.
What will you do as a board member to ensure that teachers have the support and materials to successfully assist students?
The board’s responsibility is to be the liaison between the community and the school district.  School board members who are engaged in the operation of the schools and active in the business community can make those necessary connections to provide the right resources for teachers.
How will you address the need for more schools and future growth?
As a board member, it is my responsibility to ensure the school district is being a good steward of the tax dollars they receive.  Ensuring large purchases are adequately vetted and are in line with the long-term needs of the district is a critical responsibility of a school board member.
How can the school district improve communication to parents and the community?
As stated earlier, I believe a school board member is to be a liaison between the school and the community.  The community includes parents and businesses.  Developing multiple avenues of information sharing is my primary goals for my first year as a board member.
In your opinion, how best can the Chamber of Commerce and the business community partner with the school district?
The school district, the chamber, and the economic development board have a shared responsibility to ensure our educational system is the best it can be.  Improving those partnerships and making them work positively for the students is the key to our long-term success as a county.
