One Man, Two Guvnors Continues at Amelia Community Theatre

The laugh-filled farce, One Man, Two Guvnors, is on the main stage at Amelia Community Theatre.

Playwright Richard Bean adapted his script from The Servant of Two Masters, an Italian play written by Carlo Goldoni in 1743.   Bean reset the story to Brighton, England in 1963 and filled his fast-paced comedy with physical pratfalls, sight gags, clever dialogue, and even some audience participation.

The plot revolves around Francis who is the “one man.”  Driven by his extreme hunger and need for cash, Francis ends up with two bosses or “guvnors.”   His first guvnor is the gangster Roscoe who may or may not be dead.  No one knows for sure, because Roscoe’s twin sister Rachel has disguised herself to look just like her brother and has fooled everyone, including Francis.

While waiting around for Roscoe, Francis is hired by a second employer, Stanley, who has his own secrets and is Rachel’s boyfriend. Francis tries to be at the beck and call for each boss, making sure neither knows about the other.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on August 18-20, 25-27 and 2 p.m. on August 21 at 207 Cedar Street. One Man, Two Guvnors has a suggested PG-13 rating for adult language and innuendo.  Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students through college and are available at  www.AmeliaCommunityTheatre.org or by calling (904) 261-6749.
