Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee announced January 18, 2022, as this year’s Florida Main Street Day. Since 2020, the Florida Main Street program has organized Florida Main Street Day to raise awareness of the local, statewide, and national Main Street programs. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Florida Main Street, Orlando Main Streets, and local Main Street communities will be located on the 2nd Floor Rotunda of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida.

“I am thrilled to recognize this year’s Florida Main Street Day,” said Secretary Lee. “Our Main Streets have proven to be vital in protecting and revitalizing our state’s historic downtowns and commercial corridors, and I look forward to their continued success.”

Developed in the late 1970s by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Street program works to revitalize historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial corridors by encouraging economic development within the context of historic preservation. Since 1985, Florida Main Street has worked with more than 100 communities to rejuvenate Florida’s downtowns – the community’s heart and soul. Currently, Florida Main Street oversees 54 participating communities, including Fernandina Beach Main Street.

“We are excited to join the other Main Street Districts in Tallahassee to highlight the positive impact the Main Street program has had on each of our communities,” said Lisa Finkelstein, Executive Director of Fernandina Beach Main Street.

Fernandina Beach Main Street became a participating Florida Main Street community in 2015. In 2021 alone, Fernandina Beach Main Street supported small businesses with educational and networking sessions on Safety in the Community, Online Sales and Social Media, and Financial Planning. Island Hop Craft Beer Fest was held for the first time, bringing over 1,000 people into downtown. Additional events like Sip & Shop were designed to bring shoppers into the historic downtown area. The Design Council continued work on a Streetscape Design Guide by analyzing streetlights, sidewalk materials, and landscape beds.

Fernandina Beach Main Street has partnered with the Florida Department of State to celebrate Florida Main Street Day to encourage residents and visitors to learn more about the Main Street program.
