Barnabas Center, Inc. has set the date for the 9th annual Empty Bowls luncheon for Friday, November 18, 12-1 PM at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Please mark your calendars and save the date! The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island has hauled tables, chairs, linens, silverware, and their delicious soups to the event, and provided servers since the event’s inception. It has been quite a heroic effort! Based on previous year’s successes, they have offered us an even bigger venue that will seat 700 guests – The Ritz-Carlton itself! After recovering from a pleasant shock because the venue will allow us to host 200 additional guests, we carefully considered costs because we want to ensure we continue to return the same percentage of dollars raised directly back to our programs. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island’s generous offer will allow us to contain our costs as in years past and maximize our fundraising efforts to help others! We extend our deepest gratitude to Mr. Greg Cook, General Manager and all the ladies and gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island! Parking will be extremely limited and carpooling is strongly encouraged. Parking will be available starting at 10:45 a.m. at Peters Point Beach Front Park, with complimentary event shuttle service provided by Omni Resorts Amelia Island. Shuttle service will be available 10:45 a.m. – 2 p.m. An Empty Bowl is a symbol of hunger. In support of our neighbors coping with food insecurity, Barnabas is hosting our 9th annual Empty Bowls event to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger and crisis in Nassau County. A simple meal of soup, bread and dessert will be served. In addition, each guest may select a beautiful hand painted bowl to take home. Potters and volunteers throughout the area have painted ceramic bowls so that each attendee can have a permanent reminder of the many bowls we still need to fill to provide nourishment to our neighbors who struggle with hunger. Guest Speaker Don’t miss our wonderful guest speaker and local inventor, Mike Bowling, who will share his uplifting message of the importance of hope, hard-work, and holding onto your dreams. Mike Bowling is an Amelia Island resident and creator of the famous Pound Puppies. After 18 years of working on the assembly line at a Ford Motor plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, he never gave up on his idea of creating the toy, Pound Puppies. This dream became a reality and he built a successful career using his imagination to share his talents by creating toys that are loved by all! The reality of Nassau’s hunger problem In reality, more than 7,000 of our neighbors are rarely sure how they’ll get enough to eat in the next few days. Over 2,000 of them are children. Our ongoing hunger solution Barnabas operates a large Food Pantry in east Nassau County where we work with our partners to distribute yearly over 380,000 pounds of food, equating to 318,515 meals, to our neighbors in need. Barnabas also provides food to individuals and families in need in Callahan and Hilliard. Without such help, these families often go hungry. The reality of Nassau’s healthcare problem An estimated 10,000 people in our county lack health insurance. Uninsured, lower income adults in Nassau have significant medical needs. Even more, they have limited options for adequate care. As a result, an emergency room may be the only choice. Our ongoing healthcare solution Barnabas Health Services provides affordable health and dental care for our neighbors in need. As a result, this purpose improves their health and reduces emergency resources. The reality of Nassau’s poverty problem Most noteworthy, many Nassau families are one paycheck away from crisis. Approximately 7,000 Nassau County residents live at or below the federal poverty guidelines. Their families’ personal resources are stretched beyond the limit. The Empty Bowls solution Above all, Empty Bowls is an effort to combat hunger and all its effects. Barnabas brought Empty Bowls to Nassau County to help spread awareness in our community, to continue the battle against hunger, food insecurity and poverty by connecting people with the help and hope they need to become self-sufficient. “The Bottom Line” webinar series will bring together SBA officials, small business advocates, and economic experts for discussions on how to address economic challenges facing small businesses today.
WASHINGTON – On Monday, August 22, Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the voice for America’s 33 million small businesses in President Biden’s Cabinet, and John Arensmeyer, founder and CEO of Small Business Majority, signed a co-sponsorship agreement to partner on a new webinar series, “The Bottom Line”, to introduce our small businesses across America to SBA tools and resources to address timely economic challenges, on the heels of President Biden’s signing of the Inflation Reduction Act. Please click here to view video from the signing event. A photo from the signing event can be found below. “This alliance between the SBA and Small Business Majority will help expand and deepen the SBA’s outreach network to better connect with small businesses and entrepreneurs in every corner of our nation. Throughout COVID, with the support of our incredible network, the SBA has helped small businesses pivot and survive during COVID with relief from the American Rescue Plan. This collaborative training series comes at a critical time as small businesses continue to navigate inflation, supply chain disruptions, and workforce challenges,” said Administrator Guzman. “With Small Business Majority, we will be working to provide relevant educational webinars and better communicate to small businesses owners about the vital resources the SBA offers that can help them strengthen their balance sheets and leverage the opportunities and benefits in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act which will lower health and energy costs, bolster our clean energy economy and supply chains, and shrink our federal deficit – all while strengthening success pathways to the American Dream for our entrepreneurs.” Announced following the passage of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which opens the door to enacting more robust, targeted policies that benefit Americans and small business owners still navigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including lowering healthcare and energy costs, reducing the federal deficit, and investing in clean energy solutions that create new opportunities for small manufacturers, the SBA and Small Business Majority have committed to helping entrepreneurs navigate challenges such as inflation, supply chain disruptions, workforce shortages, and other issues addressed in the IRA. Through these webinars, members of the small business community will be connected to a diverse suite of SBA and resource partner tools and strategies for long-term, stable growth, facilitate networking connections, and receive insight on the Biden-Harris Administration’s policy priorities. “Small business ownership is a potent force that can help address economic inequality and build dignity,” said John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO, Small Business Majority. “A healthy entrepreneurial ecosystem provides an innovative pathway for women, people of color, young adults, veterans, disabled people, immigrants, and rural residents to enter the mainstream American economy and build income and independence. We are excited to join in this collaboration with the SBA to bring forth knowledge-based and useful tools and resources that will help to enhance the business ecosystem and support a drive toward confident entrepreneurship.” The first webinar in this series is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, titled “How to Combat Inflation as a Small Business Owner.” This session will provide an overview of operational strategies, funding options, and resources that can help business owners deal with inflation and will be a partner collaboration with organizations like the Urban League, the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and Prosperity Now. SBA and Small Business Majority remain steadfast in lowering the barriers to opportunity for smaller firms and businesses and ensuring entrepreneurs, especially those in under-resourced areas, have equitable access to capital, essential benefits, and a solid pathway toward sustainable growth. Below is a copy of the blog post by Extension Agent, Kelsey Irvine, explaining more about how Garrett was selected for this award. This year's winner has served as an inspiration for our community and is a glowing example of what 4-H can do for our youth. Garrett has only been a member of Nassau County 4-H since March 2020 but has already built a 4-H career with the equivalency of graduating seniors. It all started with a dairy goat donation from Farm Bureau and a local family on a rainy day. That day we promised Garrett to help him feel like he belonged and that his tomorrow’s were better than his yesterdays. You have all likely heard already about Garrett. He has won many awards, been recognized by our Board of County Commissioners, stepped up to lead changes in our fair, led summer camps, and traveled the state winning awards and volunteering at fairs all over Florida. He has spoken at County and District Events, served as officers in his clubs, mentored youth, and has been honored with State level winning photography. He has completed high quality record books and built a business made possible by the community supporting him. He embraces all the joy and challenges with “learning by doing” and we truly cannot say enough about this special member. These accomplishments are what is possible when a youth feels like they belong and that they have the support to work for their dreams. When asked about his 4-H involvement, Garrett had this to say: "Since joining 4-H I have really grown as an individual. I went from being shy and timid to a confident and forthright young man. 4-H has shown me that it is ok to open up and share your knowledge with others. But most of all I have new and lasting friendships. I really feel like I finally belong and that makes all the difference in the world to me. For the first time I fell like I am making an impact in other people’s lives and I want to continue doing so.” 8/17/22 @ 8:40 a.m. - The Nassau County Road Department has several entry level job opportunities available. This video highlights the benefits of working for the County and includes information on the Apprenticeship Program which is designed to give employees a defined career path with opportunities to advance quickly.
