TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) announced that the application cycle is now open for eligible units of local governments to apply for more than $92 million in funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG-CV) Small Cities and Entitlement programs.
Administered by DEO, CDBG-CV funds are federally awarded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and designed to help local governments prepare for, prevent, or respond to the health and economic impacts of the pandemic. The activities must be critical to their locality and primarily for the benefit of low- and moderate-income residents. Local governments are encouraged to include activities that benefit workforce housing, training, and sustainability, as well as broadband infrastructure and planning. “The Department remains focused on ensuring the state is able to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic,” said Secretary Dane Eagle of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. “I encourage all eligible local governments to apply and utilize this relief funding to assist in the recovery process.” Nearly $42 million is available through the CDBG-CV Small Cities program. Eligible communities include municipalities and counties that participate in the Small Cities CDBG program. Communities may submit one application requesting a minimum of $200,000 and a maximum of $5 million in grant funding for one program or project through the competitive application cycle. To provide communities with specific program requirements and guidance on the completion and submission of the application, DEO will host a CDBG-CV Small Cities application webinar on September 9, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Eastern Time. A total of $51 million is available through the CDBG-CV Entitlement program. Eligible communities include municipalities and counties that participate in the HUD entitlement program. Entitlement communities are encouraged to coordinate with local governments and subrecipient agencies within their jurisdiction and may apply for funding up to the amount allocated to the local government through a funding formula. To provide communities with specific program requirements and guidance on the completion and submission of the application, DEO will host a CDBG-CV Entitlement application webinar on September 9, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Eastern Time. To be considered for funding, applications for the CDBG-CV Small Cities and Entitlement programs must be submitted by November 1, 2021. Office of the Nassau County Manager August 30, 2021 8/30/21 @ 10:30 a.m. – At the July 12, 2021 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution No. 2021-145, designating the section of I-95 between the Florida State line in Nassau County and the Nassau County/Duval County line as “Purple Heart Memorial Highway”. The Purple Heart is a United States military award for those who have been injured or killed while serving. Senate Bill 78 was approved by the Senate and took effect in July 2020, designating the portion of I-95 and S.W. 32nd Road in Miami-Dade County as “Purple Heart Memorial Highway”. Since then, there has been an initiative to designate other portions of I-95 as well. Florida Statute, Section 334.071, allows for the erection of markers for designation of a transportation facility for honorary or memorial purposes, contingent upon a resolution by a County Commission to support the designation. The Board adopted Resolution No. 2021-145 at the request of the Florida Department of Transportation. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer Barnabas Center

Seven of the dogs arriving Friday are special Friends – named for characters on the iconic TV series. They were scheduled to be euthanized for lack of space until NHS committed to take them in. “Even though we are at maximum capacity ourselves, we could not give up on these dogs,” NHS Executive Director Debbie Chissell said. “We are hoping the half-price adoptions will not only help us find space for these dogs in desperate need, but also bring new families together.” Along with the Friends seven, “We have also committed to taking in another 15 dogs and 10 puppies,” said Mandy Holden, NHS Operations Manager. “We get pleas on a daily basis to help save animals from situations like this. We depend on help from the community, to donate and adopt, so we can continue to save as many lives as possible.” The Friends dogs range in age from about 18 months to 3 years. “We work closely with Animal Aid USA, who reached out to us about this situation, to save hundreds of animals from Southern Georgia,” Holden said. “Animals are dumped and abandoned daily. Without this mission, these dogs wouldn’t survive.” “For us to save the lives of these dogs and hundreds more up and down the East Coast, we rely on generous donations for medical needs and food,” Chissell said. “Please consider donating today as we cannot do this without your support.” If you’d like to donate to our special friends, please visit www.nassauhumane.org, drop by the shelter at 639 Airport Road in Fernandina Beach, mail a check to that address or call NHS at (904) 321-1647. Donations may be made in honor or in memory of a loved one. If you are unable to adopt, please consider being a foster parent or a volunteer. More information is on the website. You can see pictures and bios of adoptable NHS dogs at https://www.nassauhumane.org/adoptable-dogs. Dogs arriving in the transport will also be listed there as they become available for adoption.
