April is Water Conservation Month

Nassau County Commissioner Jeff Gray; Douglas Conkey, SWRWMD
3/22/23 @ 8:30 a.m. - At the Wednesday, March 15th meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2023-026 proclaiming the month of April 2023 as Water Conservation Month in Nassau County, Florida. This follows the State's annual designation of April as Florida's Water Conservation Month, which is meant to educate citizens about how we can all help save Florida's precious water resources. 2023 is the 25th Anniversary that the State has declared April as Florida's Water Conservation Month!

This year, Water Conservation Month centers around water loss from leaky faucets, toilets and irrigation. Douglas Conkey, Intergovernmental Affairs Director for the St. Johns River Water Management District, was in attendance to accept the Resolution. He stated, "Water conservation is the most important action we can take to sustain our water supplies, meet future needs, and reduce demands on Florida's water dependent ecosystems such as springs, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The average household's leaks account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, the equivalent of the amount of water needed to do 270 loads of laundry. 10% of our homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more of water per day. Repairing simple leaks can save homeowners about 10% on their water bill".

The Board of County Commissioners urges to repair leaks and to do their part in saving Florida's water not just in April, but also year-round.

Fernandina Beach, FL – Since 2020, $1,000 Start-Ups, Inc. has helped launch 30 small businesses in Nassau County through its entrepreneurship, financial management, and life skills training program. The program is available at no cost to adults and includes up to $1,000 in business start-up funding. The 501(c)3 non-profit organization is now accepting applications for its 2023 program to begin on May 10 and concluding on January 27, 2024.

The 2022 Cohort graduated from the program on Saturday, March 25 at the annual Spring Into Action Small Business Fair at the Peck Center Gymnasium. A variety of business types have participated in the program, including retail, bakers and chefs, artists, a wide range of service providers, and others. As a complement to the Cohort, the $1,000 Start-Ups Consortium includes dozens of established local businesses and organizations who serve as mentors, resources, and collaborators to participants.

The $1,000 Start-Ups Cohort is guided through every step of starting and growing a successful small business in 26 one-hour sessions taught on Zoom led by Leah Ward-Lee with occasional professional guest presenters. Meeting on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 and Saturday mornings from 10-11, the sessions alternate between course material and homework presentations that allow the Cohort members to not only learn from the material, but from each other.

In a very practical application, four small business fairs are held throughout the year.  The first is the Prototype fair that allows the Cohort to test the marketability of their products or services in a limited environment with friends, family, former graduates, donors, and supporters.  Three additional small business fairs are open to the public and include other area small businesses who are invited to display at no cost. This collaboration allows the cohort to learn from established businesses, grow their network, increase their customer base and revenue, and circulate money within the local community.

Cohort members in good standing are reimbursed up to $1,000 business start-up or growth funding upon fulfillment of required milestones.

The enrollment process includes an interview with the lead instructor. During this interview mutual expectations are established before a written contract is signed. $1,000 never asks participants for money or for an ownership stake in their business. The application process begins at 1000dollarstartups.org/start.

$1,000 Start-Ups, Inc is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation founded by Leah Ward-Lee and Tony X. Lee with the mission to provide economic and re-entry opportunity by training and funding low-cost business start-ups for potential entrepreneurs from traditionally marginalized or at-risk communities. To build a consortium of businesses who mentor, support, and grow with each other. To provide entrepreneurship and life skills training to potential employees of consortium businesses.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 23, 2023) – MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is now offering direct container service with seven destinations in North Europe through the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT). MSC’s ScanBaltic to USA rotation is Jacksonville’s only direct container service to/from Scandinavia.

The bi-weekly service begins calling the SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal (JCT) at JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal with the arrival of the container ship MSC Olia in late April. SSA Atlantic will provide stevedoring services at Blount Island.

The port rotation is Klaipeda, Lithuania; Gdynia, Poland; Gothenburg, Sweden; Bremerhaven, Germany; Felixstowe, England; Antwerp, Belgium; Le Havre, France; New York; Philadelphia; Norfolk; Jacksonville; and Klaipeda, Lithuania.

ScanBaltic to USA is MSC’s fifth container service at JAXPORT. MSC also offers existing service from JAXPORT to destinations in Asia through the 2M Alliance; a North America service, Canada Gulf Bridge; and two Caribbean services, Bahamas Express and Florida Gulf Feeder.

“MSC is the world’s largest ocean carrier and JAXPORT’s largest container customer by the number of ocean carrier services offered through our port,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “We are proud of the relationship we have built with MSC and look forward to using our efficiencies to support their continued success in Jacksonville.”

The ScanBaltic to USA service is ideal for a number of commodities, including food and beverage, automotive parts, and forest products.

Located in the heart of the Southeast U.S., JAXPORT is Florida’s No. 1 container port by volume and one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports. Jacksonville offers a 47-foot deepwater shipping channel, two-way ship traffic with no berth or terminal congestion, and same-day access to 98 million U.S. consumers.
