3/22/23 @ 8:30 a.m. - At the Wednesday, March 15th meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2023-026 proclaiming the month of April 2023 as Water Conservation Month in Nassau County, Florida. This follows the State's annual designation of April as Florida's Water Conservation Month, which is meant to educate citizens about how we can all help save Florida's precious water resources. 2023 is the 25th Anniversary that the State has declared April as Florida's Water Conservation Month!
This year, Water Conservation Month centers around water loss from leaky faucets, toilets and irrigation. Douglas Conkey, Intergovernmental Affairs Director for the St. Johns River Water Management District, was in attendance to accept the Resolution. He stated, "Water conservation is the most important action we can take to sustain our water supplies, meet future needs, and reduce demands on Florida's water dependent ecosystems such as springs, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The average household's leaks account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, the equivalent of the amount of water needed to do 270 loads of laundry. 10% of our homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more of water per day. Repairing simple leaks can save homeowners about 10% on their water bill". The Board of County Commissioners urges to repair leaks and to do their part in saving Florida's water not just in April, but also year-round. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer.
